Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Magnum 2023, Château de Marsannay is one of the largest Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits, and one of the most debated: everything there depends on where the plot sits on the slope. The one from Château de Marsannay plays on straightness.

The Clos de Vougeot covers some fifty hectares between the route des Grands Crus and the main road, which makes it the largest red Grand Cru of the Côte de Nuits. Three sets of soils follow one another, from stony, very free draining gravels at the top of the clos to heavier clays towards the bottom. The style therefore varies a great deal from one owner to another. The upper and middle sectors, the best exposed, give solid and fleshy Pinot Noir, built on a serious tannic frame and long cellaring.

What the critics say about this cuvée

The scores below cover the most recent vintages of the cuvée, all vintages combined. The 2023 vintage obtained 95/100 from Bettane & Desseauve. The 2022 was rated 94/100 by Jasper Morris, 93/100 with a silver medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards, and 92/100 by Allen Meadows.

Château de Marsannay opens the route des Grands Crus, at the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits. It belongs to the same owner as Château de Meursault and farms 40 hectares under organic agriculture, 28 of them on the best terroirs of Marsannay. Its jewels lie elsewhere: four Grands Crus, Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot and Echezeaux, and Premiers Crus from Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée.

Tasting notes

  • Appearance: Deep and dense ruby, rim still slightly purple

  • Palate: Fleshy and broad, firm tannins that soften on the finish, fine balance between density and freshness

Serving and cellaring

Serve this Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru at 15 to 17 °C. Its cellaring potential is eight to twenty years. The magnum ages more slowly than the bottle, allow a few more years. Store the bottle lying down, at a stable temperature, away from light and vibration.

Food and wine pairings

Rib of beef, wild duck, slow cooked shoulder of lamb. Burgundian simmered dishes, boeuf or coq au vin, suit it just as well.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the Clos de Vougeot wines so different from each other?

Because the clos covers some fifty hectares shared between dozens of owners, over three soil types. The top of the clos, stony and free draining, does not give the same wine as the bottom, which is more clayey and damper.

Should it be decanted?

Yes on a young vintage: one to two hours in a decanter release its fruit and soften its tannins. Beyond fifteen years, prefer to serve it straight, uncorking the bottle shortly before the meal.

Why choose a magnum?

The magnum holds 150 cl, the equivalent of two bottles. The ratio between the volume of wine and the surface in contact with air is more favourable, which slows evolution and gives wines that are often fresher at the same age. It is also the format for large tables.

How is the bottle shipped?
