Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2023, Château de Marsannay is one of the largest Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits, and one of the most debated: everything there depends on where the plot sits on the slope. The one from Château de Marsannay plays on straightness.
The Clos de Vougeot covers some fifty hectares between the route des Grands Crus and the main road, which makes it the largest red Grand Cru of the Côte de Nuits. Three sets of soils follow one another, from stony, very free draining gravels at the top of the clos to heavier clays towards the bottom. The style therefore varies a great deal from one owner to another. The upper and middle sectors, the best exposed, give solid and fleshy Pinot Noir, built on a serious tannic frame and long cellaring.

Château de Marsannay opens the route des Grands Crus, at the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits. It belongs to the same owner as Château de Meursault and farms 40 hectares under organic agriculture, 28 of them on the best terroirs of Marsannay. Its jewels lie elsewhere: four Grands Crus, Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot and Echezeaux, and Premiers Crus from Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée.

Rib of beef, wild duck, slow cooked shoulder of lamb. Burgundian simmered dishes, boeuf or coq au vin, suit it just as well.

Frequently asked questions
Why are the Clos de Vougeot wines so different from each other?
Because the clos covers some fifty hectares shared between dozens of owners, over three soil types. The top of the clos, stony and free draining, does not give the same wine as the bottom, which is more clayey and damper.
Should it be decanted?
Yes on a young vintage: one to two hours in a decanter release its fruit and soften its tannins. Beyond fifteen years, prefer to serve it straight, uncorking the bottle shortly before the meal.
How is the bottle shipped?
Delivery is free in France on orders from 300 €. Each bottle is packed with care and shipped with tracking.
