Chambertin Grand Cru 2023, Château de Marsannay is the summit of the Château de Marsannay red range, and one of the nine Grands Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin. A bottle you buy for the wait as much as for the immediate pleasure.
Chambertin occupies the mid slope of Gevrey-Chambertin, south of the village, on thin limestone soils covered with small stones. The exposure is due east, the slope regular and the drainage natural: conditions that bring the Pinot Noir to full ripeness without heaviness. It is the most firmly framed cru of the Côte de Nuits, the one that combines serious tannic power with an almost contradictory fineness of grain. The early years often mask this architecture, which reveals itself after a decade in the cellar.
What the critics say about this cuvée
The scores below cover the most recent vintages of the cuvée, all vintages combined. The 2023 vintage obtained 98/100 from Bettane & Desseauve.
Château de Marsannay opens the route des Grands Crus, at the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits. It belongs to the same owner as Château de Meursault and farms 40 hectares under organic agriculture, 28 of them on the best terroirs of Marsannay. Its jewels lie elsewhere: four Grands Crus, Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot and Echezeaux, and Premiers Crus from Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée.

Serving and cellaring

Food and wine pairings
Roast beef, lièvre à la royale, pigeon with morels. On an evolved vintage, a ripe Époisses or a few truffle shavings over fresh pasta are enough.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Chambertin considered the king of the Grands Crus?
Because it brings together two qualities rarely combined in Pinot Noir: power and finesse. Its reputation goes back at least to the 18th century and Napoleon made it his table wine, which has never harmed its standing.
When should it be opened?
It already tastes well young, but it often closes up between three and eight years. The really interesting window begins around ten years and extends well beyond. If you open it early, allow two hours in a decanter.
How is the bottle shipped?
Delivery is free in France on orders from 300 €. Each bottle is packed with care and shipped with tracking.
