The terroir of Meursault

The Meursault vineyard stretches over east-facing slopes, on marl and limestone soils. The highest vines give taut, mineral wines, those lower down rounder wines. Chardonnay reigns almost exclusively here, even though the appellation also produces a little red wine, such as the red Meursault from Domaine Prieur-Brunet.

Meursault has no Grand Cru, but its best Premiers Crus rival the greatest white wines of Burgundy:

  • Les Perrières: the most mineral and the most taut, often considered the finest.
  • Les Charmes: the largest, renowned for its generosity and texture. Read our article focus on Les Charmes de Meursault.
  • Les Genevrières: elegant and floral, between richness and finesse.
  • Le Porusot: broad, with lovely freshness on the finish.

Alongside the Premiers Crus, some lieux-dits classified as village, such as Les Chevalières or Les Forges, offer excellent value for money.

The taste of a Meursault

A Meursault can be recognised by its golden colour and its nose of fresh butter, toasted hazelnut, white flowers and ripe fruit. On the palate, it is broad and creamy, carried by a freshness that keeps it from being heavy. With age, it develops notes of honey, almond and forest floor.

Serving and pairing a Meursault

Serve it between 12 and 14 °C, in a large white wine glass, and open it half an hour in advance if it is young. It pairs perfectly with poultry in cream sauce, a fine fish with beurre blanc, scallops, lobster or a cheese such as aged Comté. Village wines can be drunk from 3 to 4 years, while Premiers Crus benefit from waiting 6 to 10 years, or even longer. To choose the best bottles to keep, read our guide to Chardonnay for ageing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Meursault village and Meursault Premier Cru?

Meursault village comes from the whole of the appellation. Premiers Crus come from delimited plots recognised for their superior quality, such as Charmes, Perrières or Genevrières. They are more complex and keep for longer.

How long should you keep a Meursault?

Allow 3 to 8 years for a village wine and 6 to 15 years for a Premier Cru, depending on the vintage and the estate.
