Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise Les Clous Aimé 2023, Domaine A. et P. de Villaine is the domaine's benchmark Chardonnay in Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise, from the named vineyard plot Les Clous, on the heights above Bouzeron.
The named vineyard plot Les Clous lies on thin limestone soils at altitude, which gives a Chardonnay that is tauter and later ripening than the average of the Côte Chalonnaise. The cuvée carries the name of Aimé, as a family tribute. Ageing takes place in mostly old barrels, with no search for oakiness, in the spirit of the domaine: letting the terroir speak rather than the barrel.
The domaine was founded in 1971 at Bouzeron by Aubert and Pamela de Villaine. Aubert de Villaine co-managed the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti from 1974 to 2022, and applied here, in the Côte Chalonnaise, the same demanding standards as at Vosne-Romanée. The vineyard, of around twenty hectares, has been farmed under certified organic agriculture since the late 1990s, one of the first conversions in Burgundy. Pierre de Benoist, Aubert's nephew, is in charge of technical management.
