Beaune Premier Cru 2024, Château de Meursault is a blend of several climats, the named vineyard plots classified as Premier Cru on the Beaune hillside. A way to taste the Premier Cru level of the appellation without going into plot by plot detail.
The Beaune hillside lines up a long series of Premiers Crus tiered west of the town, from Les Bressandes to the Clos des Mouches. Blending several of these climats gives a wine more complete than a village: the soil is stonier at mid slope, the drainage better, and the grapes reach a more regular ripeness. The result is a better structured Pinot Noir, with more concentrated fruit, a tannic frame that is still supple and a noticeably longer finish.

Château de Meursault is one of the finest estates of the Côte de Beaune. The Moulin Foulot fief, from which it comes, dates back to the 11th century. Bought in 2012 by Olivier Halley, the estate has since expanded its vineyard: 65 hectares spread over about a hundred plots, farmed under certified organic agriculture, which give five Grands Crus, twenty Premiers Crus and a dozen village and regional appellations. The estate sells entirely direct, 100 % of its production comes from its own vines.

Frequently asked questions
Why a Premier Cru without the name of a climat?
The rules allow the blending of several named vineyard plots classified as Premier Cru within the same commune. The label then carries the mention Premier Cru alone. This is common in Beaune, where estates often hold small parcels in numerous climats.
What does the Premier Cru level bring compared with the village?
The Premiers Crus occupy the best positions on the hillside, at mid slope, where the soil is leaner and better drained. The wine gains in concentration, in length and in cellaring capacity, with tannins that are more present but finer.
