The Côte de Beaune forms the southern half of the Côte d'Or, from Ladoix to the Maranges. It is famous worldwide for its great white wines made from Chardonnay, from Meursault to the Montrachets, but also for renowned Pinot Noir reds such as Pommard, Volnay, Beaune and Corton. A unique terroir for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

The vines stretch over a narrow band of east-facing slopes, at an altitude of roughly 220 to 400 metres. The soils, made of limestone and marl, vary from one plot to the next: this is the Burgundian notion of climat, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. This mosaic explains the diversity of the wines, from one village to another and even from one vineyard to another.

The great villages of the Côte de Beaune

The villages of the great whites

  • Meursault: broad, rich whites, with Premiers Crus such as Charmes and Perrières.
  • Puligny-Montrachet: chiselled, mineral whites, with the Premiers Crus Folatières, Combettes and Referts.
  • Chassagne-Montrachet: rich whites and structured reds, with Morgeot and Grandes Ruchottes.
  • Corton-Charlemagne: the white Grand Cru of the hill of Corton, powerful and with very long ageing potential.

The villages of the great reds

  • Pommard: structured, deep reds, with the Premiers Crus Rugiens and Grands Epenots.
  • Volnay: the finest and most fragrant reds of the Côte de Beaune.
  • Beaune: numerous and accessible Premiers Crus, such as the Clos des Ursules, Grèves and Bressandes.
  • Corton: the only red Grand Cru of the Côte de Beaune, with Clos du Roi, Grèves and Pougets.

Other villages offer excellent value: Savigny-lès-Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses, Ladoix, Chorey-lès-Beaune, Monthélie, Saint-Romain, Saint-Aubin and Santenay.

The Grands Crus of the Côte de Beaune

The Côte de Beaune is home to some of the greatest white wines in the world: Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne. Discover our selection of Montrachet and read Montrachet: history, terroir and prestige.

Choosing a Côte de Beaune wine

For an aperitif or with fish, choose a village white such as Saint-Aubin or Saint-Romain. For a special occasion, a Premier Cru from Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet. With red meat, a Pommard, a Volnay or a Corton. Premiers Crus and Grands Crus benefit from several years in the cellar.
