La Tâche, a grand cru monopole in Vosne-Romanée

La Tâche is one of the grands crus of the village of Vosne-Romanée, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. In Burgundy, a monopole is a climat owned by a single proprietor. This is the case for La Tâche, owned entirely by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (often shortened to DRC): every bottle of La Tâche therefore comes from this estate.

The wine is made exclusively from Pinot Noir, planted on the limestone slopes of the Côte de Nuits. Enthusiasts look for the depth, finesse of texture and aromatic complexity that Pinot Noir can reach on this type of terroir. What to check before buying La Tâche

  • Provenance: ask where the bottle comes from and how it has travelled since leaving the estate. For such a sought-after wine, this is the first criterion.
  • Label and numbering: the estate's bottles carry an individual number on the label. Check that the label is clean, consistent with the vintage and that the number is legible.
  • Capsule and neck: intact, firmly attached capsule, with no trace of dried wine or tampering.
  • Fill level: it should be high in the neck on a recent vintage.
  • Storage conditions: a bottle kept in a cellar at a stable temperature is preferable to one with an unknown history.
  • Documentation: invoice and detailed photos. Be wary of a price well below the market.

Storing and serving La Tâche

Storage: bottle lying down, away from light and vibration, at a stable temperature of around 12 to 14 °C and with humidity close to 70%. More details in our article on wine storage.

Serving: at 15 to 17 °C, in a large Burgundy-style glass that lets the bouquet open up. A young vintage can be decanted for about an hour. An older vintage should be handled gently and served without prolonged aeration.

Food pairing: roast poultry, pigeon, game birds, wild mushroom or truffle dishes.
