Beaune Premier Cru Grèves 2022, Château de Meursault is one of the most renowned named vineyard plots of the Beaune hillside, known for its silky texture. Its name says everything about the soil: a grève is the gravel that covers the slope.
Les Grèves spread broadly across the mid-slope, west of Beaune, on stony, gravelly soils that drain quickly. This composition gives Pinot Noir a supple ripeness and a roundness of texture you can almost recognise blind. The upper part of the plot is also home to the famous Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus. The style of Les Grèves lies in balance: volume without heaviness, polished tannins, an enveloping palate that keeps freshness on the finish.
What critics say about this cuvée
The scores below cover the most recent vintages of the cuvée, all vintages taken together. The 2023 vintage was rated 94/100 by VertdeVin.
Château de Meursault is one of the finest estates of the Côte de Beaune. The Moulin Foulot fief, from which it stems, goes back to the 11th century. Bought in 2012 by Olivier Halley, the estate has since expanded its vineyard: 65 hectares spread over about a hundred plots, farmed under certified organic agriculture, which yield five Grands Crus, twenty Premiers Crus and a dozen village and regional appellations. The estate sells entirely direct, 100 % of its production comes from its own vines.

Frequently asked questions
Where does the name Grèves come from?
From grève, the word for a soil of gravel. The plot is covered with rolled pebbles and light earth, a very free draining mix that pushes the vine to look for water deep down and gives the wine its characteristic texture.
What is the Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus?
It is a parcel at the top of Les Grèves, whose name goes back to the 17th century and to a prophecy attributed to a Carmelite nun of Beaune. It belongs today to another estate, but it is part of the history of the plot.
