The Macallan: a guide to rare editions (Ruby, Aera, Edition, Folio)

Verre de single malt et fûts de sherry dans un chai écossais

The Macallan, a Speyside distillery in Scotland, offers several limited-edition series alongside its core range: the 1824 Series (Amber, Sienna, Ruby), the Edition series (No. 1 to No. 6), the Folio series, the annual Classic Cut releases and the Aera. Each follows a different logic: natural colour, an annual theme, or a tribute to the house archives. At Le Caveau des Pépites, these editions are available from €199.99 (Classic Cut 2025) up to the Folio releases and Edition No. 1.

The 1824 Series: Amber, Sienna and Ruby

The 1824 Series, named after the year the distillery was founded, classifies its whiskies not by age but by natural colour, which comes solely from sherry-seasoned oak casks. The deeper the hue, the stronger the cask influence.

The Macallan Aera

The Macallan Aera is a no-age-statement edition, appreciated for its elegant presentation and rich, sherry-cask-driven profile. It is offered at €250 and is a good entry point into the house's special editions.

The Edition series: No. 1 to No. 6

The Edition series is a collection of six numbered annual releases. Each number explores its own cask selection and theme, often developed with partners from outside the house. Many enthusiasts aim to complete the full series.

The Folio series

The Folio series draws on The Macallan's archives: each edition reproduces a historic visual from the house on an illustrated case. These limited editions are highly sought after by collectors of the brand. In our shop: Folio 8 at €965, Folio 7 at €1,270 and Folio 6 at €1,800 (last bottle).

Classic Cut and other editions

Classic Cut releases are annual editions bottled at a higher strength than the core range. Several years are available, from Classic Cut 2025 at €199.99 to Classic Cut 2017 at €595.

The Harmony Collection is also represented, including Intense Arabica (€250), Amber Meadow (€285), Smooth Arabica (€340), Rich Cacao (€365) and Fine Cacao (€720).

To discover the house style before moving on to a limited edition, the core range remains the reference: Double Cask 12 Years at €110 and Sherry Oak 12 Years at €120.

How to choose and store a Macallan edition?

  • To discover: Aera, 1824 Series Amber or a recent Classic Cut.
  • To complete a series: the Edition series and the Folio releases are collected number by number.
  • For a rare piece: Ruby, Folio 6 or Edition No. 1, available in very limited quantities.

Storage: whisky should be kept upright so the alcohol does not damage the cork, away from light and at a stable temperature. Keep the case or box in good condition: on a limited edition, it is part of the object. Unlike wine, whisky no longer evolves once bottled.
