Savigny-Lès-Beaune Rouge Magnum 2022, Château de Meursault comes from a village of the Côte de Beaune set in the Rhoin valley, a little away from the main wine road. This supple, fragrant red gives its most direct version.
Savigny-lès-Beaune sits in a small valley carved out by the Rhoin, which gives it two distinct slopes: the Beaune side, with deeper and more generous soils, and the Pernand-Vergelesses side, stonier and cooler. The village appellation often blends several named vineyard plots on both banks, hence a wine balanced between fruit and freshness. The house style is that of a Pinot Noir made for pleasure: crunchy red fruit, discreet tannins, a slender palate. This is the opposite of the frame of a Pommard.
What the critics say about this cuvée
The scores below cover the most recent vintages of the cuvée, all vintages taken together. The 2023 vintage earns 16/20 from Bourgogne Aujourd'hui and the 2021 is rated 90/100 by Jasper Morris.
Château de Meursault is one of the finest estates of the Côte de Beaune. The Moulin Foulot fief, from which it comes, dates back to the 11th century. Bought in 2012 by Olivier Halley, the estate has since expanded its vineyard: 65 hectares spread over about a hundred plots, farmed under certified organic agriculture, which give five Grands Crus, twenty Premiers Crus and a dozen village and regional appellations. The estate sells entirely direct, 100 % of its production comes from its own vines.

Serving and cellaring
Serve this Savigny-Lès-Beaune at 14 to 15 °C. Its cellaring potential is three to eight years. The magnum ages more slowly than the bottle, so allow a few more years. Store the bottle lying down, at a stable temperature, away from light and vibration.
Food pairings
Charcuterie, oeufs en meurette, roast chicken, bacon quiche. Served slightly cool, it also goes very well with a board of goat cheeses.

Frequently asked questions
Savigny-lès-Beaune, a wine to drink young?
Yes, the village appellation drinks happily between two and six years, on the fruit. Some solid vintages hold for eight or ten years, but that is not where it gives the best of itself.
Is it a good first red Bourgogne?
It is one of the best choices to start with. The tannins are fine, the fruit is easy to read and the style stays easy to understand for a village appellation of the Côte de Beaune. A good starting point before moving on to Pommard or Volnay.
Why choose a magnum?
The magnum holds 150 cl, the equivalent of two bottles. The ratio between the volume of wine and the surface exchanging with the air is more favourable, which slows evolution and often gives fresher wines at the same age. It is also the format for large tables.
How is the bottle shipped?
Shipping is free in France on orders from 300 €. Each bottle is carefully packed and sent with tracked delivery.
