Savigny-Lès-Beaune Rouge 2024, Château de Meursault comes from a village of the Côte de Beaune set in the valley of the Rhoin, a little away from the great road of the crus. This supple, perfumed red gives the most direct version of it.
Savigny-lès-Beaune occupies a combe carved out by the Rhoin, which gives it two distinct slopes: the one on the Beaune side, with deeper and more generous soils, and the one on the Pernand-Vergelesses side, stonier and cooler. The village appellation often blends several named vineyard plots on both banks, hence a wine balanced between fruit and freshness. The house style is that of a Pinot Noir for pleasure: crunchy red fruit, discreet tannins, a slender palate. It is the opposite of the frame of a Pommard.
What the critics say about this cuvée
The scores below cover the most recent vintages of the cuvée, all vintages taken together. The 2023 vintage was given 16/20 by Bourgogne Aujourd'hui and the 2021 is rated 90/100 by Jasper Morris.
Château de Meursault is one of the finest estates in the Côte de Beaune. The fief of Moulin Foulot, from which it comes, dates back to the 11th century. Bought in 2012 by Olivier Halley, the estate has since expanded its vineyard: 65 hectares spread over about a hundred parcels, farmed under certified organic agriculture, producing five Grands Crus, twenty Premiers Crus and a dozen village and regional appellations. The estate sells entirely direct, and 100 % of its production comes from its own vines.

Frequently asked questions
Savigny-lès-Beaune, a wine to drink young?
Yes, the village appellation is happily drunk between two and six years, on the fruit. Some solid vintages hold up to eight or ten years, but that is not where it gives the best of itself.
Is it a good first red Bourgogne?
It is one of the best choices to start with. The tannins are fine, the fruit is easy to read and the style stays easy to understand for a communal appellation of the Côte de Beaune. A good starting point before tackling Pommard or Volnay.
