Drappier Oenothèque 2003 is a vintage champagne from Maison Drappier's Réserve de l'Oenothèque, an old vintage aged for a long time on laths and then disgorged late.

The Réserve de l'Oenothèque is the living memory of Maison Drappier: old vintages, sometimes very rare, kept in the 12th-century Cistercian cellars of Urville and disgorged in small batches, sometimes even one bottle at a time, when the family judges that they fully express their birth year. The 2003 vintage is remembered for its very hot, dry summer, which led to an early harvest and expressive grapes. Despite this richness, the blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay has kept a lovely freshness, preserved by a low dosage.

Key facts

  • Origin: France, Champagne, Côte des Bar, Urville
  • Producer: Champagne Drappier
  • Vintage: 2003
  • Grapes: Pinot Noir 70%, Chardonnay 30%
  • Dosage: 4 g/L, liqueur matured in oak casks
  • Size: 75 cl

Tasting notes

  • Colour: Beautiful sunny yellow
  • Nose: Summery notes of wild flowers, quince and hay
  • Palate: Fresh stone fruit, hint of liquorice, astonishing freshness for the year

Serving and storage

Serve it at around 9 to 10 °C, in a large white wine glass, and let it open up for a few minutes: an old champagne reveals itself with aeration. Disgorged late, it is ready to drink, but can still be kept for a few years lying down, in a cool place away from light.

Food pairing

Turbot with brown butter, roast lobster, poultry with morels, veal sweetbreads, truffle risotto or an old Comté. Avoid overly spicy dishes that would mask its complexity.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Maison Drappier?

Founded in 1808 in Urville, in the Côte des Bar, Maison Drappier is a family house now run by Michel Drappier and his children. A recognised Pinot Noir specialist, it grows its vines on the Kimmeridgian limestone of the Aube and ages its wines in 12th-century Cistercian cellars.

What is late disgorgement?

Disgorgement means expelling the yeast deposit before final corking. By delaying it for many years, the house lets the wine evolve in contact with its lees, protected from oxygen: it gains complexity while keeping its freshness.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to choose between wine, champagne, spirits, liqueur or chartreuse?

It all depends on the occasion (and what you feel like!).

  • Wine: to go with a good meal.
  • Champagne: for aperitifs and celebrations.
  • Spirits: to sip slowly, for lovers of character.
  • Liqueurs and Chartreuse: as a digestif, neat or on ice.

Are your products exclusively of French origin?

No, our cellar is open to the world! Although we favour French gems, we also select treasures from elsewhere.

What is the difference between a liqueur and a chartreuse?

Chartreuse is a herbal liqueur made by Carthusian monks according to a secret recipe. It is a liqueur , but not all liqueurs are Chartreuse.

Which products do you select?

We select great houses and renowned estates: iconic cuvées, vintages and limited editions.

At what temperature should you serve your alcoholic beverages?

Red wines: 15 to 17 °C

Champagnes: 8 to 10 °C, and 10 to 12 °C for great vintages

Spirits: room temperature
