Beaune Premier Cru Toussaints Magnum 2022, Château de Meursault is one of the most approachable Premiers Crus of Beaune, a mid-slope red with frank fruit and a supple texture, which gives a good idea of the house style without waiting ten years.

The named vineyard plot Les Toussaints lies north of Beaune, in the continuation of Les Cent Vignes and Les Bressandes, on an east facing mid-slope. The soils are clay and limestone, stony and fairly shallow, which favours even ripening of Pinot Noir and wines of fine grain. Beaune Premier Cru rarely gives massive reds: what you look for here is perfume, suppleness of texture and clean red fruit. Les Toussaints belongs to that family, with a little more flesh than the airiest neighbouring crus.

What critics say about this cuvée

The scores below cover the most recent vintages of the cuvée, all vintages taken together. The 2023 vintage earns 16.5/20 at Bourgogne Aujourd'hui, 93/100 at VertdeVin and 92/100 from Jasper Morris. The 2022 is rated 92/100 by Allen Meadows and 91/100 by VertdeVin, while the 2021 receives 91/100 from Jasper Morris as from Allen Meadows.

Château de Meursault is one of the finest estates of the Côte de Beaune. The Moulin Foulot fief, from which it stems, goes back to the 11th century. Bought in 2012 by Olivier Halley, the estate has since expanded its vineyard: 65 hectares spread over about a hundred plots, farmed under certified organic agriculture, which yield five Grands Crus, twenty Premiers Crus and a dozen village and regional appellations. The estate sells entirely direct, 100 % of its production comes from its own vines.

Serving and cellaring

Serve this Beaune Premier Cru Toussaints at 15 to 16 °C. Its cellaring potential is five to twelve years. The magnum ages more slowly than the bottle, so allow a few extra years. Store the bottle lying down, at a stable temperature, away from light and vibration.

Food and wine pairings

Duck breast with cherries, roast guinea fowl, pâté en croûte. With an older vintage, a board of bloomy rind cheeses suits it very well.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Beaune Premier Cru a wine for cellaring?

Yes, but moderately. The Premiers Crus of Beaune are often drunk earlier than those of Pommard or Volnay, between five and twelve years depending on the vintage. Les Toussaints is already very enjoyable after three or four years in the cellar.

Should this wine be decanted?

With a young vintage, thirty to forty minutes in a decanter help the fruit settle and the tannins soften. Beyond eight years, serve it straight away, handling the bottle without jolts so as not to disturb the sediment.

Why choose a magnum?

The magnum holds 150 cl, that is two bottles. The ratio between the volume of wine and the surface exchanging with air is more favourable, which slows evolution and often gives fresher wines at the same age. It is also the format for big tables.

How is the bottle shipped?
