Beaune Premier Cru 2023, Château de Meursault is a blend of several climats classified as Premier Cru on the Beaune hillside. A way of tasting the Premier Cru level of the appellation without going into plot by plot detail.
The Beaune hillside lines up a long series of Premiers Crus tiered to the west of the town, from Les Bressandes to Clos des Mouches. Blending several of these climats gives a more complete wine than a village: the earth is stonier at mid slope, the drainage is better, and the grapes reach a more regular ripeness. The result is a better framed Pinot Noir, with more concentrated fruit, a tannic weave that is still supple and a noticeably longer finish.

Château de Meursault is one of the finest estates in the Côte de Beaune. The Moulin Foulot fief it grew out of dates back to the 11th century. Bought in 2012 by Olivier Halley, the estate has since expanded its vineyard: 65 hectares across around a hundred plots, farmed under certified organic agriculture, giving five Grands Crus, twenty Premiers Crus and a dozen village and regional appellations. The estate sells entirely direct, and 100 % of its production comes from its own vines.

Frequently asked questions
Why a Premier Cru without a climat name?
The regulations allow the blending of several climats classified as Premier Cru within the same commune. The label then carries only the words Premier Cru. This is frequent in Beaune, where estates often hold small plots in numerous climats.
What does the Premier Cru level bring compared with the village level?
The Premiers Crus occupy the best positions on the hillside, at mid slope, where the soil is leaner and better drained. The wine gains in concentration, in length and in keeping capacity, with tannins that are more present but finer.
