It is the most perfumed Grand Cru in the Château de Marsannay range.

Echezeaux covers some thirty hectares divided into several climats, in the village of Flagey-Echezeaux, immediately north of Vosne-Romanée and above the Clos de Vougeot. The soils mix limestone and stony material washed down from the combe, with varying depths of earth. The appellation gives Pinot Noir that is more slender and more floral than its neighbours to the north, where spice and rose sign the Vosne register. These are wines of lace rather than of force, which open faster than the grands crus of Gevrey while still going the distance.

What the critics say about this cuvée

The scores below cover the most recent vintages of the cuvée, all vintages combined. The 2023 vintage received 96/100 from TWOFW and 95/100 from Bettane + Desseauve. The 2022 obtained 95/100 from Jasper Morris, 95/100 from TWOFW, 18/20 in Bourgogne Aujourd'hui and 93/100 from Allen Meadows.

Château de Marsannay opens the route des Grands Crus, at the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits. It belongs to the same owner as Château de Meursault and farms 40 hectares under organic agriculture, 28 of them on the best terroirs of Marsannay. Its jewels lie elsewhere: four Grands Crus, Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot and Echezeaux, and Premiers Crus from Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée.

Key points

Origin: France, Bourgogne, Côte de Nuits

Appellation: Echezeaux Grand Cru

Estate: Château de Marsannay

Grape variety: Pinot Noir 100 %

Vintage: 2023

Colour: Red wine

Viticulture: Certified organic farming

Size: 75 cl

Tasting notes

Appearance: Bright ruby, cherry shade, luminous highlights

Nose: Faded rose, raspberry, oriental spices, cinnamon, an undergrowth base

Palate: Silky and airy, lace like tannins, long and perfumed finish on spice and red fruit

Serving and cellaring

Serve this Echezeaux Grand Cru at 15 to 16 °C.
