The soils are clay and limestone, stony and fairly shallow, which favours even ripening of Pinot Noir and wines of fine grain. Beaune Premier Cru rarely gives massive reds: what you look for here is perfume, suppleness of texture and clean red fruit. Les Toussaints belongs to that family, with a little more flesh than the airiest neighbouring crus.

What critics say about this cuvée

The scores below cover the most recent vintages of the cuvée, all vintages taken together. The 2023 vintage earns 16.5/20 at Bourgogne Aujourd'hui, 93/100 at VertdeVin and 92/100 from Jasper Morris. The 2022 is rated 92/100 by Allen Meadows and 91/100 by VertdeVin, while the 2021 receives 91/100 from Jasper Morris as from Allen Meadows.

Château de Meursault is one of the finest estates of the Côte de Beaune. The Moulin Foulot fief, from which it stems, goes back to the 11th century. Bought in 2012 by Olivier Halley, the estate has since expanded its vineyard: 65 hectares spread over about a hundred plots, farmed under certified organic agriculture, which yield five Grands Crus, twenty Premiers Crus and a dozen village and regional appellations. The estate sells entirely direct, 100 % of its production comes from its own vines.

Key points

Origin: France, Bourgogne, Côte de Beaune

Appellation: Beaune Premier Cru Toussaints

Estate: Château de Meursault

Grape variety: Pinot Noir 100 %

Vintage: 2023

Colour: Red wine

Viticulture: Certified organic agriculture

Volume: 75 cl

Tasting notes

Appearance: Moderately intense ruby, violet highlights in young vintages

Nose: Cherry, redcurrant, peony, a line of liquorice and sweet spice

Palate: Supple attack, fine powdery tannins, fresh finish on red fruit

Serving and cellaring

Serve this Beaune Premier Cru Toussaints at 15 to 16 °C. The Premiers Crus of Beaune are often drunk earlier than those of Pommard or Volnay, between five and twelve years depending on the vintage.
